Pestle Nias, Indonesia, early 20th c Provenance: Emile Deletaille, Brussels Wooden pestles from Nias are extremely rare. Beautifully carved, this pestle's base exhibits a unique wear pattern from continued use as a grinding implement, while a smooth patina on the handle suggests where it was grasped. The rounded shape of the pestle's head has been carved in Nias style. Oval eyes and a sharp pointed nose, create a bold profile while repetitive geometric designs decorate the body.
